Gujarat Clears SOP for Green Ring Road Project

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana, a flagship initiative aimed at developing climate-resilient and sustainable road infrastructure across the state’s municipal corporations.
The government has earmarked Rs 2 billion for the creation of green ring roads by urban local bodies. The scheme is designed to divert vehicles away from city centres, reducing congestion and enhancing urban mobility.
Drafted following recommendations from an expert advisory committee chaired by the Principal Secretary, the SOP emphasises the use of advanced green construction technologies and materials to ensure durable, low-maintenance, and aesthetically aligned infrastructure.
Key design elements include carriageways, medians, drainage and rainwater management systems, utilities, tree plantations, traffic management, and road safety provisions. To encourage a circular economy, 25 per cent of road construction materials must come from recycled sources, reducing reliance on fresh resources.
Municipal corporations are also advised to prioritise renewable energy use in these projects, minimising carbon footprints and aligning with broader environmental objectives. Implementation will follow strict government protocols, with technical and environmental reviews of Detailed Project Reports conducted at each stage.
Chief Minister Patel has framed the initiative as a key step towards climate-resilient urban infrastructure as part of Urban Development Year 2025.
