Govt approves Rs 13,020 cr for Border Infrastructure and Management

The central government has approved a Rs 13,020 crore central sector umbrella scheme for the continuation of the Border Infrastructure and Management (BIM) during the 15th Finance Commission cycle from 2021-22 to 2025-26.

The decision will bolster infrastructure for enhancing border management, policing and guarding, as per an official statement.

The Narendra Modi government has backed the continuation of the central sector umbrella scheme of BIM over the 15th Finance Commission Cycle from 2021-22 to 2025-26, for Rs.13,020 crore, it said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, under the guidance of Home Minister Amit Shah is dedicated to enhancing border infrastructure and management.

The BIM scheme will assist in the development of infrastructures like border fence, technological solutions, border floodlights, border roads and border outposts (BOPs) and company operating bases to ensure India's borders with Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar.

India's border with Pakistan is 3,323 km long, comprising approximately 775 km of the Line of Control (LoC). The border length is 4,096 km with Bangladesh, 3,488 km with China, 1,751 km with Nepal, 699 km with Bhutan, 1,643 km with Myanmar.

Officials said as part of the strategy to secure the borders as also to develop infrastructure in the border areas of the nation, the government has been taking many initiatives that comprise expeditious development of fencing, floodlighting and roads along its borders with Bangladesh, Pakistan and Myanmar, and development of strategic roads along its borders with Nepal, Bhutan and China.

The government has additionally deployed hi-tech electronic surveillance equipment on international borders and constructed additional BOPs.

Implementation Status of Jal Jeevan Mission

Since August 2019 the Government has implemented Jal Jeevan Mission to provide assured potable water through household tap connections in rural India. At the start of the mission only 32.3 million (mn) rural households, representing 16.7 per cent, were reported to have tap water connections.
