NHAI Begins Pre-Monsoon Drain Desiltation On Guwahati Highway

The National Highways Authority of India has commenced pre-monsoon drain desiltation along the Jalukbari to Jorabat stretch of the national highway encircling Guwahati. The activity seeks to restore unobstructed flow in roadside drains and reduce waterlogging during the forthcoming monsoon season. The authority has initiated phased operations to address critical low-lying sections and to improve road safety, vehicular movement and resilience of the corridor. Local municipal bodies have been asked to coordinate traffic management during the works.

Heavy machinery and manual teams have been deployed to remove silt, debris and vegetation from primary and secondary drains along the carriageway. The operations include clearing inlet and outlet points, desilting culverts and ensuring connectivity with natural drains to restore capacity. Engineers from the authority are supervising technical aspects while contractors follow environmental safeguards and debris disposal protocols to prevent secondary blockage.

Traffic management plans are in place to minimise disruption to commuters and freight movement on this busy arterial route. Temporary diversions and lane restrictions will be implemented during working hours with signage and flagmen deployed at key junctions. The authority has advised motorists to allow additional travel time and to heed traffic personnel instructions, while emergency access will be maintained at all times. Coordination with city police and local administration is ongoing to ensure smooth execution.

Officials expect the desiltation drive to improve drainage capacity and reduce the incidence of road flooding that disrupts daily life and commerce during heavy rains. Regular monitoring will assess effectiveness and any further remedial work will be scheduled as required before peak monsoon. The authority indicated that such preventive maintenance is essential for preserving infrastructure and protecting commuters. Residents and businesses along the corridor will be kept informed of significant developments.
