Puducherry Plans Four-Lane Flyover And Major Road Upgrades

The Puducherry administration has unveiled plans for a four-lane flyover and extensive road widening to ease traffic congestion in the coastal town. The projects were announced by K Kailashnathan during Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

Under the proposal, a four-lane flyover of around 4 km will be constructed from Indira Gandhi Square to Rajiv Gandhi Square and Marapalam. In addition, a 13.5 km four-lane road will be developed between Ariyankuppam and Mullodai, while existing roads leading up to Marapalam will be widened to improve traffic movement.

The projects will be implemented with financial assistance of Rs 4.37 billion from the Union government. According to the Lieutenant Governor, the flyover will connect key highways leading to Chennai, Villupuram and Chidambaram, and is expected to significantly reduce travel time while improving road safety for daily commuters.

Once the projects are completed, traffic congestion within Puducherry town is projected to decline by nearly 55 per cent. The administration believes the road upgrades will also support the region’s growing profile as a tourism destination by improving urban mobility and access.

Linking infrastructure development with tourism growth, Kailashnathan said Puducherry continues to rank among the most preferred tourist destinations globally. He added that the government is placing strong emphasis on strengthening tourism-related infrastructure across the Union Territory.

Beyond road development, the administration is also planning to develop the Thirunallar Lord Dharbaranyeswarar temple in Karaikal into a global pilgrimage destination under the proposed Thirunallar Temple Town project.
