Kollam Junction railway station to be redeveloped

Kerala's Kollam Junction railway station is set to be redeveloped under international standards.

Kollam is one of the 21 railway stations that is getting upgraded to international standards in the nation. The railway station is situated in the city of Kollam and is the biggest railway station in terms of the number of tracks. It is additionally one of the oldest in Kerala.

The news came to light after MP N K Premachandran declared it over a release. Kollam Junction will have a training institute, and a commercial complex, among other things. As per Premachandran, the railway station should be built by December 2023.

The railway station is going to receive its first addition as early as November 25, 2021. Kollam Junction will have its second escalator and uplift by that time. The minister has recommended converting a rest house that was made there way back in 1904.

Regular trains will commence running in the state, just like pre-Covid times, and extra measures will be taken to resolve any issues that may arise for season ticket holders. It is necessary to note here that the Covid situation in the nation is still not entirely under control, hence, special trains might proceed to run in the coming times.

The railways had halted all scheduled trains, and are operating special trains across the nation in this age of Covid-19. Railways state that it would be challenging to go back to normalcy so soon.

It has additionally been reported that the electrification of the Kollam-Punalur route would be concluded by March 31, 2022.
