Indian Railways to Build Mega Coaching Terminals in 20 Cities

Indian Railways is preparing to develop Mega Coaching Terminals in 20 major cities as part of its plan to ease congestion and expand train-handling capacity. The initiative aims to ensure smoother operations during peak travel periods, including festival seasons and the high-demand summer and winter months.

According to reports, the cities identified include significant railway hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, all of which experience heavy volumes of incoming and outgoing trains.

Construction of one such terminal is already in progress in Ahmedabad, where around 45 trains currently originate. Once the new facility becomes operational, the number of originating trains is expected to rise to nearly 150, significantly expanding the city’s railway capacity. A dedicated Mega Coaching Terminal is also being planned for Surat, another major rail corridor.

Further strengthening infrastructure in Ahmedabad, the Railways has announced the addition of three new platforms at the city’s main station. These upgrades are intended to streamline operations, accommodate higher passenger volumes and support the long-term modernisation of India’s railway network.
