Railways Eyes Nuclear Power for Sustainable Green Energy

Indian Railways is exploring nuclear energy as part of its ongoing green initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Anil Kakodkar, revealed that discussions are underway between the Railways and the Department of Atomic Energy to assess the feasibility of using nuclear power for rail operations. While the focus of the talks remains at a preliminary stage, it highlights the Railways commitment to diversifying its energy sources.

The Indian government has been increasingly promoting nuclear energy as a clean and reliable power source, with the Railways now considering it for its massive electricity requirements. As one of the largest energy consumers in the country, the transition to nuclear power could significantly impact India's overall carbon footprint.

The Railways has already taken several steps towards greener energy, with a considerable portion of its network electrified. Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, have also been harnessed to reduce reliance on traditional power generation methods.
