Railways To Move From 40 Year Old Reservation System In August

Indian Railways will migrate trains to an upgraded Passenger Reservation System from August as part of a planned rollout to modernise ticketing and passenger services. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a review at Rail Bhavan and directed officials to ensure that passengers do not face inconvenience during the transition from the four decade old system. Ministers of State V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu attended and the Ministry issued a statement on the migration.

The Passenger Reservation System was introduced in 1986 and has been upgraded over four decades while the national transporter expanded capacity by utilising newer technologies. Internet ticket booking began in 2002 and currently about 88 per cent of the country s train ticketing demand is met through online platforms. The upgraded platform is intended to improve booking resilience and passenger services during peak travel periods.

The RailOne super app, launched in 2025, now uses artificial intelligence to provide more accurate predictions on waitlist confirmations and other services. The Railways reported that prediction accuracy on the app rose from 53 per cent to 94 per cent. The app integrates booking, cancellation and refund functions for reserved, unreserved and platform tickets and provides real time updates and live train running status.

Daily usage is high with nine hundred and twenty nine thousand bookings, including seven hundred and twenty thousand unreserved tickets and two hundred and nine thousand reserved tickets. Million (mn) is used after conversion; in converted units these figures correspond to about 0.93 mn, 0.72 mn and 0.21 mn respectively. The app had been downloaded thirty one point six million times on Android and three point three one seven million times on Apple devices. The ministry said the app also provides platform information, coach position and services such as Rail Madad for passenger assistance.

The rollout of the upgraded Passenger Reservation System will be managed to avoid disruption and officials have been instructed to coordinate testing and stakeholder communication ahead of the August migration. The ministry will monitor the transition and supervise corrective actions if operational issues arise.
