Stalin Opens Rail Overbridge At Korukkupet

Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the newly constructed rail-over-bridge at railway level crossing two B on Manali Road in Korukkupet and laid the foundation stone for another rail-over-bridge at railway crossing two A on Ennore High Road. The newly opened bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs 960.4 million and the foundation stone was laid for a project estimated at Rs 750 mn. A new park adjacent to the bridge is planned at a cost of Rs 11 mn.

The rail-over-bridge at crossing two B replaces a busy level crossing that regularly disrupted traffic and caused prolonged delays for motorists and heavy vehicles owing to frequent gate closures, with nearly 42,000 vehicles halted at the two crossings. The corridors along Korukkupet–Manali Road and Ennore High Road witness heavy vehicular movement including a notable number of goods carriers, and the demand for a bridge had been pending for nearly four decades. Construction works for the projects were initiated in 2023.

The two B rail-over-bridge has a total length of 840 m including a 72 m railway span and a carriageway measuring eight point four metres, with five metre service roads provided on either side. The structure is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce idling times for commercial and private vehicles and should enhance connectivity along the industrial and residential corridors. The development is intended to benefit 0.1 mn residents of nearby localities including Kodungaiyur, Korukkupet, Tondiarpet, Ezhil Nagar, Kannadasan Nagar and Nehru Nagar.

The proposed park will be developed over an extent of 19,128 square feet and will include landscaped greenery, a walking track, seating arrangements and lighting to improve public amenities near the bridge. Officials indicated that the combined interventions of grade separation and public space development are aimed at easing congestion and improving urban liveability in the area. The projects form part of wider efforts to replace level crossings and modernise road infrastructure in the region.
