Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has initiated discussions with Japan's Urban Renaissance Agency (UR) to explore potential collaboration on its Vision 2047 Master Plan and future waterfront development initiatives.The meeting, held on 17 June 2026, brought together senior officials from both organisations, including Dr M Angamuthu, Chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority, and Takehiro Umezu, Director General, Urban Renaissance Agency, Japan. UR is a leading Japanese institution specialising in urban regeneration, waterfront development and integrated city planning.The discussions focused on key areas such as waterfront redevelopment, port-city integration, urban design, mobility planning and the sustainable development of port-linked infrastructure. The Japanese agency expressed interest in supporting Mumbai Port's long-term vision and shared insights from landmark redevelopment projects including Yokohama Minato Mirai 21, Umekita Osaka and Sannomiya Kobe.The meeting also reviewed several ongoing and proposed initiatives being pursued by MbPA, including the Maharashtra Shipbuilding Cluster, marina and waterfront development projects, a proposed international convention centre, creation of public recreational spaces along the waterfront and future water-based transport systems such as water taxis and water buses.Mumbai Port Authority is pursuing a long-term development vision that integrates port operations, waterfront revitalisation, public spaces, mobility and sustainable urban growth, said Dr M Angamuthu. Japan's experience in planned urban redevelopment and waterfront transformation offers valuable insights. Such exchanges help us evaluate global best practices that can enhance port efficiency, improve public access to waterfronts and contribute to Mumbai's future development.The discussions also covered future mobility integration within MbPA areas, including the proposed Metro Line 11 stations around Sewri. UR indicated its interest in serving as a knowledge and design-planning partner, with possible collaboration involving the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for planning and infrastructure development.The engagement concluded with an invitation for MbPA officials to visit Japan to study urban redevelopment and waterfront regeneration projects. The initiative marks a step towards incorporating international best practices into Mumbai Port's Vision 2047 development strategy.
