WDB Hosts Seminar Marking 100th Warship Milestone

The Warship Design Bureau (WDB), India’s premier naval design organisation under Naval Headquarters in New Delhi, is hosting a one-day seminar titled ‘Nation Building Through Shipbuilding’ on 23 July 2025 at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi.
Originally established in 1964 as the Central Design Office, WDB evolved into the Directorate of Naval Design in 1970 and has, over six decades, played a vital role in designing and delivering 20 classes of warships — from Seaward Defence Boats to Aircraft Carriers.
The recent delivery of Y12652 Udaygiri on 1 July 2025 marked a major milestone, becoming the 100th indigenously designed warship delivered to the nation by the Indian Navy and WDB.
To commemorate this achievement, the seminar will convene key stakeholders from the Government of India, Indian Navy, shipyards, classification societies, industry, and academia. It aims to foster collaborative discussions on shipbuilding policy, explore global technological advancements, and address challenges faced by Indian shipyards in delivering vessels that meet international standards.
The 100th warship delivery stands as a testament to India’s growing self-reliance in defence production. A thriving shipbuilding industry not only bolsters national security but also fuels technological innovation, supports MSMEs, drives economic development, and generates employment — contributing meaningfully to the country’s long-term growth and resilience.
