Honeywell, USA BioEnergy tie-up $2.8 bn biorefinery

Honeywell has signed an agreement with USA BioEnergy (USABE) to implement its Experion PKS Distributed Control System (DCS) at the $2.8 billion Texas Renewable Fuels Bon Wier biorefinery. This facility aims to convert wood waste into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), addressing the increasing demand for cleaner fuels in the airline industry.

The project is set to support the production of 680 million gallons of SAF under a 20-year offtake agreement with Southwest Airlines. Once blended with conventional fuels, the SAF will yield 2.59 billion gallons of net-zero fuel, potentially avoiding 30 million metric tons of CO2 emissions.

Honeywell's Experion® PKS will oversee and optimize the plant’s operations. Nick Andrews, CEO of USA BioEnergy, noted, “Choosing Honeywell’s systems for our Bon Wier facility was a strategic decision to ensure maximum efficiency and safety standards.”

Currently, the facility is in the design and engineering phase, with Citi acting as the company’s representative. Honeywell’s responsibilities will also include integrating safety and cybersecurity systems to safeguard the biorefinery’s critical assets.
