OPTCL Power Lab Inaugurated To Strengthen Grid Reliability

Deputy chief minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo inaugurated a state-of-the-art power system simulation laboratory of the Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited at its Power Training Centre in Chandaka. He described the initiative as reflecting the state government's commitment to building a modern, reliable and technology-driven power sector aligned with the vision of Viksit Odisha. The ceremony underscored the focus on strengthening institutional capability to manage a transforming electricity network. Officials from OPTCL and the energy department attended the event and released a training calendar for the centre.

The laboratory is equipped with advanced simulation tools that enable engineers to model complex grid scenarios, analyse load flow, assess system stability and simulate fault conditions in real time. These capabilities will enhance OPTCL's ability to maintain a resilient and efficient transmission network amid rising electricity demand and greater integration of renewable energy sources. The platform supports scenario testing that can inform operational responses and investment planning without risk to the live grid. It also allows evaluation of contingency plans and sequence-of-event studies to improve response times.

The OPTCL chairman and managing director Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma indicated that the laboratory will function as a centre of excellence for capacity building, research and innovation in power system studies. The facility is intended to provide hands-on training to engineers from OPTCL and the State Load Despatch Centre while fostering collaboration with academic and technical partners. Emphasis will be placed on data-driven decision making and the development of skills needed to manage complex, decentralised energy flows. The training calendar aims to institutionalise regular upskilling and knowledge sharing.

By combining practical simulation exercises with analytical tools, the laboratory is designed to improve preparedness for grid contingencies and reduce outage durations through better planning and response. It is expected to support long-term network planning and operational readiness as the state pursues greater electrification and renewable deployment. The facility therefore represents an investment in technical capacity that should contribute to improved service quality and reliability for consumers across the state.
