Rooftop Solar Installed In 2.5 Million Homes Under Surya Ghar

More than 2.5 million households across India have installed rooftop solar systems under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition, the government said.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the rapid growth in residential solar installations highlights rising interest among homeowners in generating their own electricity, reducing power bills and lowering dependence on the grid. The uptake has been supported by growing awareness of renewable energy benefits and favourable policy measures.

Under the scheme, eligible households receive financial assistance to install rooftop solar panels, helping cut electricity costs while reducing carbon emissions. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to scale up clean energy adoption and advance India’s renewable energy targets.

The Surya Ghar programme was launched with an ambitious goal of covering 10 million homes with rooftop solar systems by FY27. Progress towards this target has been steady, with states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh emerging as key contributors. Industry observers say simplified application processes and direct subsidy transfers have encouraged participation across both urban and rural areas.

Officials added that rooftop solar is increasingly becoming a critical component of India’s renewable energy mix, complementing large-scale solar parks and utility-led projects. The latest milestone underscores the growing importance of decentralised clean energy solutions in India’s shift towards sustainable and self-reliant power generation.
