Tamil Nadu Sets New Record In Wind Power Generation

According to a Daily Thanthi report, Tamil Nadu set a new single day record for wind power generation when output reached 5,834 megawatt (MW) as the southwest monsoon intensified and wind speeds increased across the State. The surge reflected seasonal conditions that favour turbine output and followed forecasts of stronger winds along the coast. Officials noted the level represented the highest daily wind power figure recorded in the State.

The State's overall wind power generation capacity has been rising steadily, supported by consistent project development and favourable weather patterns. During the peak wind season, Tamil Nadu has generated between 110 million (mn) and 113 mn units of electricity in a single day through its wind farms. Authorities have directed that the entire quantum of power generated be fully utilised to meet demand and to reduce reliance on thermal generation.

Grid managers have been advised to integrate the variable supply efficiently and to dispatch renewable output wherever feasible while ensuring system stability. The latest high output underlined the importance of transmission infrastructure and of scheduling practices that can accommodate rapid increases in renewable generation. State energy planners indicated that maximising utilisation of wind output remains a priority during the monsoon months.

With this achievement, Tamil Nadu continued to lead the southern states in wind power generation and to demonstrate the resource potential of its coastal and hill sites. India's largest wind power park at Muppandal in Kanniyakumari district has an installed capacity of about 1,500 MW and remains a central component of the State's wind portfolio. Officials said continued attention to maintenance and grid integration would help sustain high levels of output.
