Mumbai: Two buildings collapse in a day

Two buildings have collapsed in Mumbai due to heavy rains on a single day – Thursday, July 16 – one of them in the Fort area and another in Malad.

At least six people have lost their lives in a part of the Bhanushali building that collapsed in south Mumbai’s Fort on Thursday. Several people were trapped under the debris when a portion of the old, six-storey residential building collapsed on Mint Road near Lucky House.

Several fire engines, rescue vans and ambulances were reportedly rushed to the spot. Rescue operations at the Fort building site continued this morning; more than 20 have reportedly been rescued so far. As reported, four bodies were pulled out of the debris by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) overnight.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray visited the spot to take stock of the rescue operations. The state’s Cabinet Minister for Housing Jitendra Ahwad and Mumbai’s Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh also visited the site.

It is reported that the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) had vacated the building; repair works were underway at the time of the collapse. However, some people were reported to still have been residing in the building.

A portion of the three-storey tenement building that collapsed in Malad’s Malwani has claimed the lives of two people so far, including a child.
