AMC takes action against buildings for flouting fire safety norms

On Wednesday, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) notified the Gujarat high court that it has begun a vigorous and exhaustive drive to guarantee that the fire safety measures are correctly adhered to and the buildings get valid fire NOC.

It said that the 2,588 structures of offices, restaurants, shops, schools and hospitals are subjected to sealing to guarantee proper execution of fire safety measures.

In an affidavit listed in response to a PIL registered by advocate Amit Panchal for the proper execution of fire safety measures after the Shrey Hospital fire tragedy, the civic organisation alleged that 660 hotels and restaurants, 1,295 shops and offices, 603 schools and colleges, two hospitals are subjected to sealing for not possessing valid fire NOC and for illegal use of buildings.

AMC told the media that it has sealed 41 hospitals and annulled the Form-Cs given to them under provisions of the Bombay Nursing Homes Registration Act. It also indicated closure notices released to more than 250 schools last month.

The civic organisation has praised its fire safety drive-in the past year and said that out of 10,222 structures needed to get fire NOCs, only 2,456 buildings now lack them.

417 school buildings are without valid fire NOC, and all 1,761 hospitals and clinics in the city have received valid fire NOC.
