Belagavi Sanctioned 100 Electric Buses Under PM-eBus Sewa Scheme

Belagavi has been sanctioned 100 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, with Rs 68.5 mn allocated for civil infrastructure. The PM-eBus Sewa Scheme aims to deploy 10,000 air-conditioned electric buses across more than 100 cities, prioritising smaller cities and those without organised bus services, and it provides central assistance for depot development and power infrastructure. Officials said the allocation for civil works will support depot upgrades and charging facilities to ensure operational readiness and reliable daily services.

The state government reported that the Central Bus Station in Belagavi was constructed and inaugurated on 27 December 2022 and that the Belagavi City Bus Station built under the Smart City scheme was inaugurated on four October 2025. These completed terminals are expected to improve passenger amenities and accommodate increased fleet operations as the electric buses are phased into service.

Under Smart City initiatives the city has developed 12.38 kilometres of non-motorised vehicle lanes, which include cycle tracks and pedestrian-friendly footpaths along major roads, to improve safe connectivity and promote sustainable mobility. The National Highways Authority of India has taken up a proposed Ring Road to decongest city traffic, with Package I in the bidding stage and Packages II and III in the detailed project report stage.

Authorities indicated that the combined investments in vehicles, depot infrastructure and urban mobility measures are intended to reduce emissions and strengthen public transport in Belagavi. The measures are expected to contribute to long-term traffic decongestion and environmental sustainability while improving last mile connectivity and commuter experience across the city. Coordination between central and state agencies will be key to timely implementation and to maximising benefits for daily users of the public network.
