The Gurugram City Bus Ltd (GMCBL) has begun a three-day trial of a nine-metre electric bus inducted into its fleet last month to assess performance under actual traffic and road conditions on four city routes. GMCBL, which operates under the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), currently runs 150 CNG buses and is expected to receive 100 more electric buses in batches of 25 over the next three to four months under the PM e-Sewa scheme. The first run covered route 212B, operating between Basai Chowk and central city points while carrying officials and a load to simulate operational conditions. The trial is intended to provide empirical data on in service performance. The bus will also be tested on routes 215B, 134B and 254B, covering stretches that include the Gurugram Bus Stand, Dundahera, Iffco Metro Station, Dhana Morh and Pataudi. Particular attention will be paid to battery performance on congested stretches, passenger load capacity and vehicle behaviour on uneven and undulating roads, GMDA officials indicated. The air conditioned vehicle has a seating capacity of 25 passengers and will be evaluated for reliability and adaptability to varying route characteristics. Operational data and feedback generated during the three-day exercise will be analysed to assess battery efficiency and passenger handling. GMCBL chief executive Vishwajeet Chaudhary said the trial would provide operational insights before a decision is taken on deploying similar electric buses on additional routes and would help identify route characteristics and operational requirements for efficient electric bus operations. The exercise is designed to capture parameters such as energy consumption, turnaround times and passenger boarding patterns under peak and off peak conditions. Data from the trial will be used to refine deployment plans and inform charging and maintenance schedules as the fleet expands. The GMDA chief executive PC Meena described the initiative as part of efforts to explore cleaner and more sustainable public transport solutions for Gurugram. The three-day assessment will form the basis for broader operational decisions as the authority weighs the performance results.
