Cabinet Clears Rs 118.29 Billion Expansion for Five IITs

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a Rs 118.29 billion investment to expand academic and research infrastructure at five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs): Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Palakkad (Kerala), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), and Dharwad (Karnataka).

This Phase-B construction plan, scheduled from 2025–26 to 2028–29, will increase student capacity by 6,576 seats, raising the total from 7,111 to 13,687 across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.

The expansion includes setting up five new research parks to drive innovation and foster stronger industry-academia linkages. Additionally, 130 new professor-level faculty positions (Level 14 and above) will be created to support academic growth.

The move is expected to boost employment opportunities, create demand in local economies, and help bridge regional educational gaps. It reinforces the government’s commitment to world-class education infrastructure and India's long-term innovation goals.
