Centre Approves Rs 16.67 Billion Expansion For Srinagar Airport

The central government has approved an expansion plan for Srinagar airport valued at Rs 16.67 billion (bn), marking a major investment in air connectivity for the region. The approval covers a comprehensive upgrade aimed at increasing passenger handling capacity and modernising airport infrastructure. The move is intended to support tourism and improve year-round links between the Kashmir Valley and other parts of the country. The approval signals a sustained policy focus on regional infrastructure and will form part of broader connectivity initiatives.

The project will focus on enhancements to the passenger terminal, airside facilities and surface transport interfaces to streamline operations and reduce congestion. Planners will prioritise improvements to aprons, taxiways and parking areas while upgrading passenger amenities and security systems. The objective is to create a more resilient facility capable of handling higher traffic volumes and diverse aircraft movements. Design work will consider passenger flow, baggage handling and multimodal links to enhance overall efficiency.

Financing for the works stems from central allocations and the approved sum will be deployed in phases under existing infrastructure programmes. Coordination between central and local authorities will be necessary to manage land, environmental and regulatory clearances before construction progresses. The investment is expected to generate employment opportunities and support ancillary services in the local economy. Contract awards and detailed engineering will follow statutory clearances and budgetary scheduling.

Officials will emphasise safety and resilience in design to ensure operations remain robust during peak seasons and adverse weather conditions. Enhanced airport capacity is also likely to strengthen strategic connectivity and improve logistics for essential supplies and emergency responses. Stakeholders will monitor progress to align the expansion with broader transport and tourism objectives. Regular reviews and public reporting will be used to keep stakeholders informed of milestones and expenditure.
