Bihar Plans 150 Km Patna Ring Road Under Rs 150,000 mn Push

The Bihar government has proposed a 150 km ring road under the Bharatmala programme to reshape mobility in and around the capital. The project is estimated at around Rs 150,000 mn and is intended to modernise Patna on the lines of major metros. The corridor will form a loop and cover approximately 1,350 square km, connecting suburban and periurban areas.

Beginning near Kanhauli in Bihta, the alignment will pass through Naubatpur, Ramnagar, Kacchi Dargah, Bidupur, Hajipur, Sonepur, Dighwara and Sherpur before reconnecting. The plan envisages integration of 12 national highways and five state highways to create a seamless corridor for long distance and local traffic. Two major bridges across the Ganga are included to secure cross river connectivity and to reduce travel time between key nodes.

Designed as a six lane access controlled corridor, the ring road will permit vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 80 km/h without interruptions from traffic signals. Entry and exit points will be strictly regulated to manage merging and to improve safety standards along the route. The access control model is expected to lower accident rates and to enhance freight movement efficiency for industrial and logistics users in the region.

Project promoters say the scheme will stimulate regional development, support urban expansion plans and unlock investment opportunities in housing, industrial parks and logistics hubs while also relieving inner city congestion. Detailed design and land acquisition processes are to follow, with environmental assessments and stakeholder consultations planned before construction commences. Officials expect phased implementation to align with the Bharatmala programme timelines and to integrate upgrades to public transit and last mile connectivity as the corridor develops.
