CSIR-CRRI And BPCL Win Record For Plastic Geocell Road Section

CSIR-Central Road Research Institute and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited have been recognised by the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records for constructing the first roadblock section using a technical textile geocell made from end-of-life plastic. The felicitation was held at the CSIR-CRRI auditorium in New Delhi and was attended by senior institute and industry representatives including the Director General of CSIR and Secretary, DSIR. The recognition highlights a practical demonstration of converting difficult-to-manage plastic waste into value-added materials for road infrastructure.

The developed geocell system is produced from processed end-of-life plastic and designed to provide structural support, durability and field applicability while contributing to circular economy objectives and reducing environmental burden from plastic disposal. Extensive material characterisation, performance evaluation and validation studies were undertaken to ensure the system met engineering performance requirements for road applications. The technology offers an innovative pathway for integrating waste management with resilient road construction at scale.

CSIR-CRRI officials described the initiative as addressing national priorities of sustainable waste management and resource efficient infrastructure development and said the work demonstrates the strength of collaborative research with industry partners. Scientists involved explained that the project combined laboratory testing with field trials to verify structural integrity and long term behaviour under traffic loads and environmental conditions. BPCL representatives indicated the project aligns with refinery sustainability mandates and supports the company's objectives to translate research into scalable field applications.

The partners highlighted industry-academia collaboration as central to moving laboratory innovations into real-world applications and said the demonstration could inform future policies and practices for sustainable infrastructure. The event concluded with acknowledgement of the record recognition and a vote of thanks from a senior CSIR-CRRI scientist, and the Asia Book of Records citation was noted as affirming the novelty and impact of the first-of-its-kind demonstration in road engineering. The achievement was presented as a milestone that showcases how scientific innovation can address the challenge of end-of-life plastic management through practical infrastructure solutions.
