Delhi PWD Plans Rs 6.268 Billion Road Upgrade Across City

The Public Works Department Delhi (PWD) has planned a citywide road strengthening programme worth Rs 6.268 billion (bn) to address widespread potholes and improve major corridors. The initiative is slated to commence in the new financial year and aims to rehabilitate and upgrade several urban roads across the capital. Officials expect the works to reduce frequent repair cycles and extend pavement durability.

Bids have been invited for the packages as part of a broad effort to improve driving conditions and road resilience. The programme will use a scientific pavement condition assessment conducted by a Network Survey Vehicle to identify cracks, potholes and surface wear prior to repair. The PWD has indicated an anticipated construction completion period of six months from the start of works for each contract.

The total allocation has been apportioned across three regions with South Delhi receiving the largest share. East Delhi has been allocated Rs 1.431 billion (bn), South Delhi Rs 2.565 billion (bn) and North Delhi Rs 2.272 billion (bn). The distribution reflects prioritisation of high traffic corridors and stretches with recurrent surface deterioration.

South Delhi strengthening works will cover routes including West End Marg, the 100-Foota Road in Chhatarpur, SSN Marg and Mandi Road alongside several local service roads. Improvements are also planned for key traffic corridors such as the Defence Colony flyover service road, the Barapullah Elevated Road Phase one stretch and the Nehru Place flyover on Outer Ring Road. North Delhi efforts will focus on connectors such as the link from Outer Ring Road at Bhera Enclave to Sai Baba Mandir and the Zakhira flyover while East Delhi works will concentrate around Mayur Vihar and the NH-24 to Akshardham flyover loop.
