ROB Projects Advance Across Mavelikara Lok Sabha Seat

Major infrastructure upgrades are progressing across the Mavelikara Lok Sabha constituency, with several road over bridge (ROB) projects advancing at different stages to address long-standing traffic congestion at railway level crossings. The projects span the districts of Kollam, Alappuzha and Kottayam and are aimed at providing permanent relief to commuters and local businesses, according to Kodikunnil Suresh.

The proposed ROB at the Avaneeswaram level crossing in Kollam district was approved during 2020–21 and has received in-principle approval for 100 per cent railway funding. Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited has been appointed as the executing agency, and the process of obtaining government-level General Arrangement Drawing approval is currently underway.

In Kollam district, the ROB project at the Mynagappally level crossing was approved in 2016–17. Following General Arrangement Drawing approval in July 2022, land acquisition is now in progress. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce congestion along the busy Kayamkulam–Kollam railway section.

In Alappuzha district, construction of the Thrippakudam railway overbridge has already begun. Meanwhile, work on the proposed ROB at the Mavelikara Kallumala level crossing is progressing through the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala after the completion of land acquisition. In Kottayam district, approvals have also been granted for ROB projects at Nalukodi and Vadakkekara.

Additionally, ROB projects at Thakazhi in Alappuzha district and Changanassery in Kottayam district received approval during the 2023–24 financial year. Both projects have secured in-principle approval for 100 per cent railway funding, and execution procedures through KRDCL are ongoing. Construction is expected to commence once General Arrangement Drawing approvals are obtained.

Suresh said the coordinated rollout of these projects reflects a sustained effort to modernise transport infrastructure across the constituency and eliminate bottlenecks caused by railway crossings.
