Maersk flags off weekly rail service from Sonipat to Gujarat

AP Moller - Maersk launched the Pratigya Express, a weekly dedicated rail service from Sonipat Inland Container Depot (ICD) in NCR to APM Terminals Pipavav Port on India's western coast in Gujarat.

The train will transport cargo from Sonipat ICD to APM Terminals Pipavav Port in two and a half days. From there, the cargo will be able to connect to services such as the Shaheen Express, which will be launched soon, or the MECL. Both of these services will then be able to transport the cargo to markets in the Middle East or Europe. According to studies, moving cargo by rail rather than road has advantages in terms of both cost and time savings. These two benefits eventually also contribute to reducing carbon footprint.

Every week, Maersk's new train service on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) will transport 90 TEUs (twenty feet equivalent units of containers). APM Terminals Pipavav Port is also significant because it was the first port to be connected to the DFC and has excellent connectivity to the hinterland via its rail head and road infrastructure.
