Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and the Meerut Metro today, marking a significant expansion of high-speed public transport in the National Capital Region. The event in Meerut brings into service the Namo Bharat RRTS corridor and a municipal metro line aimed at improving intercity and intra-city travel. Officials described the projects as milestones in urban and regional connectivity and as part of wider efforts to modernise transport infrastructure.

The Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System will provide rapid transit services linking suburban and satellite cities with the national capital, and the RRTS name will be used henceforth. Planners expect the system to offer faster journey times compared with conventional rail and to integrate with existing metro and rail networks to enable seamless transfers. The project has been presented as a step towards strengthening regional economic links and reducing travel-related congestion for daily commuters.

The Meerut Metro is designed to enhance local urban mobility within Meerut and to complement the RRTS corridor by facilitating last mile connectivity. Improvements in public transport infrastructure are expected to encourage a modal shift from private vehicles to mass transit, lowering congestion and pollution.
