Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and the Meerut Metro today, marking a significant expansion of high-speed public transport in the National Capital Region. The event in Meerut brings into service the Namo Bharat RRTS corridor and a municipal metro line aimed at improving intercity and intra-city travel. Officials described the projects as milestones in urban and regional connectivity and as part of wider efforts to modernise transport infrastructure.

The Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System will provide rapid transit services linking suburban and satellite cities with the national capital, and the RRTS name will be used henceforth. Planners expect the system to offer faster journey times compared with conventional rail and to integrate with existing metro and rail networks to enable seamless transfers. The project has been presented as a step towards strengthening regional economic links and reducing travel-related congestion for daily commuters.

The Meerut Metro is designed to enhance local urban mobility within Meerut and to complement the RRTS corridor by facilitating last mile connectivity. Municipal authorities highlighted that metro services will support more organised urban growth and smoother commuter flows across the city. Improvements in public transport infrastructure are expected to encourage a modal shift from private vehicles to mass transit, lowering congestion and pollution.

The Prime Minister’s inauguration is portrayed by officials as a demonstration of the government’s continued emphasis on transport modernisation and citizen-centric infrastructure. Authorities indicated that the new systems will prioritise safety, reliability and passenger convenience as they commence operations. Observers noted that these inaugurations are intended to accelerate regional development and to provide practical benefits for daily travellers.

VE Commercial Vehicles recorded sales of 7,978 units in May 2026, compared to 7,401 units in May 2025, registering growth of 7.8 per cent.
