World's largest cricket stadium Motera to host Donald Trump today

The ‘Namaste Trump’ event to host US President Donald Trump in Gujarat is being held at the newly-constructed or newly-renovated Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad today. The event has been reportedly named ‘Namaste Trump’ on the lines of the ‘Howdy, Modi’ programme organised in the US in 2019.

The stadium, also known as the Sardar Patel Stadium, will soon be inaugurated. As per the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), the cricket stadium at Motera is the world’s largest with a capacity of 110,000 seats, beating out Australia's iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MGC) - currently the world’s largest cricket ground with a seating capacity of 90,000 people.

As reported, Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to address people in the stadium after taking part in a roadshow, as per the reported schedule.

The Motera stadium, owned by the GCA, has been reconstructed after its renovation was proposed by the Gujarat Government, at an overall cost of about Rs 7 billion. The old stadium, which was constructed in 1982 with a seating capacity of 49,000 people, was entirely demolished to rebuild the new one. This stadium hosted its first ODI in 1984.

The entire complex of Motera Stadium is spread over 64 acre. As reported, it will host 76 corporate boxes, four dressing rooms, a club house and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The stadium is also reported to host an exhibition match between Asia XI and World XI later this year.

BCCI released the aerial view of the new stadium, which was reconstructed in two years, on Twitter last week. The stadium will reportedly be opened to all after Trump's visit to India.

The stadium was originally named Gujarat Stadium, but later changed to Sardar Patel Stadium as a tribute to the legendary freedom fighter.
