The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) has proposed installing rooftop solar systems totalling 200 megawatt (MW) across about 200 government office buildings in the state. Officials said the initiative forms part of the state's push to expand renewable energy, reduce reliance on conventional power sources and cut electricity expenditure in public buildings. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) proposing the works and estimating the project cost at Rs 2 billion (Rs 2 bn) has been submitted to the state government for approval. The project is proposed to be executed under the Renewable Energy Service Company model, which would see private developers install, generate and operate the rooftop plants at the offices. Officials indicated that the government may announce the scheme in the forthcoming Assembly session and that TNGECL revived the plan after joint feasibility studies with the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco). The earlier attempt to install 20 megawatt of rooftop capacity across Chennai and neighbouring districts did not attract bidders. State authorities cancelled tenders issued between October 2025 and February 2026 after finding irregularities in the procurement process, and that action stalled progress on the previous programme. Following directions from the central government to expedite renewable projects, TNGECL prepared a fresh DPR covering offices statewide. Officials identified rooftop space constraints as a major challenge and said that collectorates and revenue department offices have been prioritised where adequate area is available. Officials assessed that the proposed installations would enable government offices to meet a substantial portion of daytime electricity requirements through solar power, lowering power bills and supporting the state's clean energy targets. Once the project secures state approval, TNGECL intends to float fresh tenders to select private developers under the RESCO model. The electricity minister held a review meeting at the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) headquarters to assess generation, procurement and distribution and noted progress on key thermal projects including the Udangudi plant.
