Union Minister Reviews Power And Urban Development Schemes With Tripura

Union Minister Manohar Lal reviewed power sector and urban development schemes for the State of Tripura in Agartala today. The meeting brought together the Chief Minister of Tripura Manik Saha, the State Minister for Power and senior officials from the State Government, the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and power sector public sector undertakings (PSUs).

The minister outlined key areas where the State power department and the PSUs could collaborate under a detailed action plan and discussed progress under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) as well as operational and financial parameters of the distribution companies (DISCOMs). He emphasised the need to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses and to improve the financial performance of the DISCOMs, and he urged improved revenue realisation with particular focus on conversion of meters for government consumers to prepaid arrangements.

He reviewed the progress of smart metering in the State and advised expeditious implementation; the State committed to conversion of government consumers to prepaid metering by August 2026 and to complete pending smart meter works by July 2027. The minister also examined resource adequacy and intra-State transmission planning to meet growing demand and advised that transmission capacity addition should keep pace with demand growth; the State pledged expeditious augmentation of intra-State transmission infrastructure in line with the resource adequacy plan.

Progress under PM-KUSUM and the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was examined and the State was advised to leverage these schemes to expand access to clean energy in remote and underserved areas. The State committed to install rooftop solar for 0.2 million (mn) consumers by March 2027, which the meeting noted would help to reduce electricity costs for those consumers and support energy transition.

The minister assured continued support and cooperation from the Government of India for the overall development of the State and its power sector, and the Chief Minister affirmed that the State would take necessary measures for expeditious implementation of sanctioned works and for improving sector performance.
