The new Yamuna rail bridge in Delhi has become partially operational, with full commissioning expected within the next fortnight, marking a major upgrade to the city’s rail infrastructure. As per news reports, the Down line connecting Old Delhi to Shahdara and Ghaziabad is now functional, while the Up line will begin operations after final construction and maintenance work. The bridge, built at a cost of Rs 2.27 billion, will replace the century-old Loha Pul, which currently operates under speed restrictions of 20–25 kmph. The nearly 1 km-long structure features double rail lines and has been constructed using modern steel girders to support higher speeds and capacity. The project faced prolonged delays due to engineering challenges, including foundation work in the Yamuna riverbed and clearances near protected sites such as Salimgarh Fort.Once fully operational, the bridge is expected to ease congestion, improve train speeds and significantly enhance east–west rail connectivity across Delhi.
