NHAI Approves Revised Enchakkal Flyover Design to Resume Work

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) approved a revised design for the Enchakkal flyover approach roads in Thiruvananthapuram last week, enabling construction to resume after months of delay. The updated plan replaces the retaining walls previously proposed on either side of the approaches with four additional supporting pillars on both the northern and southern sides to address safety concerns following recent failures elsewhere in Kerala. The contractor, Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd, has resumed on-site activity and begun mobilising resources to expedite execution. Priority has been given to completing approach road structures and drainage systems ahead of the southwest monsoon, which officials said is expected within a short timeframe.

The project is estimated at around Rs 470 million (mn) and forms part of works along the NH-66 corridor intended to reduce persistent congestion at Enchakkal Junction, one of the busiest traffic nodes in the city. The junction serves as a convergence point for routes from East Fort, Vallakadavu, Attakulangara and Pettah, and provides access towards Kovalam, Shanghumugham and Vizhinjam. Substantial progress has already been achieved on the main structure, with all five spans completed, and attention has shifted to approach works, lighting and other ancillary elements required for operational readiness.

Officials indicated that the revised approach design prioritises long term durability and structural integrity, incorporating lessons drawn from recent infrastructure failures in the state. The additional pillars are intended to increase load bearing capacity and provide greater resilience under varying ground and weather conditions. Contractors have been directed to accelerate site works and ensure drainage and erosion control measures are in place to minimise weather related disruptions.

The resumption of activity following technical approval illustrates the importance of timely engineering interventions in urban infrastructure projects, particularly in areas with challenging soil profiles and seasonal rainfall. Once completed, the flyover is expected to ease vehicular movement along the airport corridor and streamline traffic flow on the NH-66 stretch, subject to execution timelines and climatic conditions. The project remains on course for phased completion as site works proceed.
