Delhi Metro Phase V(B) Approved With Over 97.16 km Expansion

The Delhi government has approved Phase V(B) of the Delhi Metro expansion, a project that will add over 97.16 km of new corridors across seven routes and include 65 new stations. The expansion targets underserved pockets of the national capital, improving last-mile connectivity for residents of Najafgarh, Narela, Mithapur and Khera. Authorities submitted the Detailed Project Report to the Central Government and the plan has won initial clearance pending final Cabinet approval and financial sanction. Completion of major works is slated for 2029.

The planned network comprises routes such as Dhansa Bus Stand to Nangloi, Central Secretariat to Kishangarh and Samaypur Badli to Narela, among others, summing to 97.16 km and 65 stations. Project proponents expect enhanced integration with existing lines and feeder systems to reduce travel times and transfer burdens for commuters. The DPR outlines technical and station plans and requests funding and scheduling approvals before construction begins. Final design and tendering will proceed once financial clearances are confirmed.

The estimated cost of Phase V(B) is Rs 482.04 billion, equivalent to Rs 48,204 crore, which will finance civil works, signalling, stations and associated infrastructure. This investment is intended to support civil contractors, supply chains and urban mobility upgrades across multiple zones. Planners anticipate phased construction to reduce disruption while accelerating connectivity gains.

Officials indicate that improved metro coverage will reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease congestion on arterial roads, particularly during peak hours, by shifting passengers to rail. Better access to feeder services, buses and e-rickshaws is expected to make door-to-door journeys more seamless and affordable. The expansion is projected to strengthen links to major commercial and residential hubs and improve commute reliability.
