Delhi Plans 97 km Metro Expansion Under Phase V-B

The Government of Delhi is preparing to roll out a 97 km metro expansion under Phase V-B that is intended to strengthen urban connectivity across emerging corridors in the National Capital Region. The proposal, prepared in the past week, identifies multiple new corridors and extensions aimed at decongesting existing routes and supporting planned urban growth. Implementation will be entrusted to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, hereafter DMRC, which will oversee project planning and delivery.

Phase V-B focuses on improving links between peripheral residential clusters and major transit hubs to enhance last-mile access and integrate services. The plan outlines integration of metro routes with buses and feeder services so that commuters experience smoother interchanges and reduced travel time. Detailed project reports, alignment studies and feasibility assessments will form part of the approval process with state and central agencies prior to execution.

The expansion arrives amid sustained increases in passenger volumes on the existing network driven by population growth and rising reliance on public transport. Capacity augmentation through new lines and extensions is presented as essential to preserve service efficiency and to ease congestion on overburdened corridors. Planners indicate implementation will be phased and that timelines and investment details will be finalised after requisite approvals and funding arrangements are secured.

Phase V-B builds on earlier stages of the metro network that substantially expanded coverage across Delhi and adjoining regions and aims to target areas that have seen rapid urbanisation but remain under-served by rapid transit. Infrastructure authorities expect the metro to play a central role in supporting sustainable urban mobility and in reducing pressure on road networks. The 97 km addition is described as part of a long term strategy to improve connectivity and support integrated urban development.

DMR Engineering Reports FY 25-26 Financial Results
