Indian Railways Plans Modified Onboard Garbage Disposal System

Indian Railways (IR) is piloting a modified onboard garbage disposal system aimed at increasing waste-holding capacity and limiting overflow during long journeys. The prototype has been developed by the Wagon Repair Workshop, Jhansi, and is intended to strengthen cleanliness and simplify collection and disposal of waste on trains. The initiative addresses recurring problems of overflowing bins and litter inside coaches.

The current arrangement in LHB coaches uses two standard garbage bins, each with a capacity of about 15 to 20 litres, which can prove insufficient on extended trips. To tackle this, engineers have developed a larger collection arrangement that moves away from small-capacity bins. The proposed layout comprises a garbage drop box, a connector and an undergear garbage collector to centralise storage.

Passengers will use the drop box installed on the coach floor in the usual manner, and a connector between the cabin floor and undergear will channel waste downward. A gravity-fed mechanism will transfer refuse into the high-capacity collector mounted beneath the coach, removing the need for frequent manual handling during journeys. The undergear collector has been designed in stainless steel for corrosion resistance and strength and features a specialised three to 10 taper to aid removal and emptying. Both the drop box and collector can be cleaned independently from either side to improve sanitation and odour control.

The workshop cited a collector capacity of 367.4 litres, substantially higher than the conventional arrangement, and said the extra storage should reduce incidences of overflowing bins and waste being discarded on railway tracks. The design makes use of available undercoach space without interfering with existing undergear or structural components. The workshop described the modification as a practical, economical and sustainable measure to improve onboard waste management and passenger experience.
