Indian Railways records highest ever freight loading for the month of May

Despite the Covid-19 situation, Indian Railways freight loading recorded the maximum capacity for the month of May at 114.8 mt.

Indian Railways made the highest ever freight loading of 114.8 million tonne (mt) in May, 9.7% higher than May 2019 when it was 104.6 mt for the same period.

The vital products transported in May included 54.52 mt of Coal, 15.12 mt of Iron Ore, 5.61 mt of Foodgrains, 5.36 mt of Cement, 4.2 mt of Clinker, 3.68 mt of Fertilizers, and 3.18 mt of Mineral Oil.

This year in May, railways earned Rs 11,604.94 crore from freight loading. Wagon turnaround time has improved by 26% in May. The turnaround time of the Wagon is registered as 4.18 days compared to 6.46 days in May 2019. Indian Railways also gave concessions and discounts to make the freight movement very pleasing.

The speed of the freight trains has improved in the existing network. The improvement in freight speed leads to cost saving for all stakeholders. The freight speed has also doubled in the past 18 months.

The four zones have registered the average speed for freight trains to be more than 50 kmph. Because of some geographical conditions, some areas provide good speed to the freight trains. An average speed of 45.6 kmph registered for freight trains in May 2021, which is 26% higher compared to May 2019, when it was 36.19 kmph.
