MMRDA Completes Key Railway Span On Metro Line Six

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has completed a significant construction milestone on Metro Line six by erecting the second steel composite girder span over the active Western Railway corridor at Jogeshwari. The segment was one of the more technically sensitive portions of the project owing to continuous suburban train movement and constrained execution windows.

With this development the overall physical progress of Metro Line six has crossed over 88 per cent, indicating steady advancement towards final completion. The newly installed span measures 31.16 metres in length and weighs around 90 metric tonne (t), and it comprises steel composite girders together with diaphragms and bracing designed to support long term durability and operational safety.

The railway span installation had been planned within a traffic block of three hours ten minutes but the execution was completed in one hour 35 minutes, almost half the allotted time, which helped limit disruption to suburban railway operations while maintaining required safety procedures. The operation involved sequential tasks including overhead equipment shutdown, wire lowering, precise crane positioning, heavy lifting, accurate placement of the structure, inspection and restoration of railway systems.

Two high capacity cranes of 500 t and 600 t were deployed simultaneously to carry out the lifting over the live railway corridor, and the activity required minute level coordination among multiple teams, contractors and Western Railway authorities. MMRDA officials said the completion of the span ahead of schedule reflected improved planning, technical capability and coordination among stakeholders and affirmed that strict safety and engineering standards continued to be followed.

With two steel spans now successfully placed across the railway corridor the project has reached an important engineering milestone on this metro line. Once operational the line will connect Swami Samarth Nagar (Andheri Lokhandwala) to Vikhroli, improving east–west connectivity, reducing travel time across key stretches of the city and offering a more structured and reliable public transport option for commuters.
