Nagaland Assembly Flags Encroachment Of Railway Land In Dimapur

The Nagaland Legislative Assembly discussed the alleged encroachment of railway land in Dimapur following questions from lawmakers. Members expressed concern at reports of unauthorised occupation and called for details about the extent and tenure of the affected land. The debate prompted requests for the state government to provide a status update on actions taken so far. Several legislators urged early intervention to prevent escalation and protect infrastructure investment.

Lawmakers sought clarification on whether land records and demarcation had been updated and urged coordination with Indian Railways to ascertain legal ownership. They also asked that the district administration identify occupants and distinguish between long standing settlers and recent encroachers. The assembly emphasised that any action should follow due legal process and protect the rights of vulnerable residents. They recommended outreach to affected families to explain options and timelines.

The state administrative side indicated that it would engage with railway authorities and local officials to conduct a thorough survey and verify titles before enforcement measures are taken. Officials were reported to have been asked to present a plan for eviction, relocation or regularisation, where appropriate, and to ensure minimal disruption to rail operations. The assembly asked for timelines for the completion of verification and subsequent remedial steps. The government indicated financial and legal aspects would be examined.

The issue was framed as part of wider urban land pressures in Dimapur, where infrastructure projects can be impeded by unclear land usage and unauthorised developments. Legislators underscored the need for improved land records and mapping to prevent recurrence and to safeguard public safety and transport services. The assembly resolved to monitor progress and to seek periodic updates until the matter is resolved. The matter was linked to broader governance reforms on urban planning and land administration.
