Panvel terminus project is nears completion

The Panvel terminus project is nearing completion. Upon completion, the terminus will cater to more trains from Central Railway and become a major focal point for Konkan Railway trains and other trains down south. The projects comprise a new island platform having a coach length of 26 km, and a home platform having a circulating area for passengers.

The project was Sanctioned in 2016-17 and is expected to be completed by December 2023. Currently, 75% of the physical work has been completed. Panvel will be the first rail terminus of Navi Mumbai enabling commuters to board various outstation trains at Panvel avoiding the hassle to travel to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) or Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT).

The most important thing is that it would create additional facilities without requiring all the other trains to travel all the way to southern Mumbai at Wadibunder or Mazgaon yards for its maintenance. The coaching complex along with the hub of Kalamboli will take care of such things.

Outstation train services towards Konkan, Maharashtra would be expected to operate from this new train terminus. As of now, about 20 outstation trains operate between Mumbai and Konkan on a daily basis while another 5 or 6 new trains would also be introduced after the terminus opens for operations. Central Railway also aims to introduce new trains of 24 coaches from the Panvel terminus. The number of trains may increase with the completion of the electrification of the Konkan Railway.
