Vijayawada Railway Infrastructure Set for Major Overhaul

The Vijayawada railway infrastructure is set for a major overhaul aimed at modernising station facilities and enhancing network capacity. Officials said the initiative will address passenger amenities, track works and signalling upgrades across key sections serving the city. The plan aims to improve safety, reduce congestion and support increased train operations in the region.

Upgrades will include refurbishment of platforms, improved waiting areas, better sanitation facilities and enhanced accessibility for elderly and persons with disabilities. Plans also cover modern ticketing systems, expansion of foot overbridges and creation of multimodal interchange points with local bus services. Engineers will survey track geometry and drainage to ensure resilience during monsoon months and to enable higher operational speeds where feasible.

Signalling modernisation will prioritise electronic interlocking and centralised traffic control to reduce delays and improve line capacity. Electrification and overhead equipment maintenance are scheduled as part of the phased works to sustain efficient traction and lower operating costs. The project is expected to coordinate with ongoing national programmes to align standards and procurement.

Authorities indicated investment will also target last mile connectivity and parking solutions to ease commuter access. Teams will consult local stakeholders to minimise disruption during construction and to phase works around peak travel periods. Contractors are to adopt safety protocols and environmental safeguards to protect local communities and waterways.

Officials said the overhaul is intended to support economic activity and improve the passenger experience while preparing the network for future demand. Implementation will proceed in stages to maintain services and to monitor performance metrics and commuter feedback. Training for staff will focus on operational efficiency and customer service to ensure the benefits are sustained after completion.
