BDD Chawls Redevelopment Gets Vital Project Status

The Maharashtra government has granted the BDD Chawls redevelopment project vital project status to accelerate its remaining phases and ensure timely completion. The state has also fixed new deadlines for key metro lines — Metro 2B between Andheri and Mandale by 31 March 2027, and the Swami Samarth Nagar–Vikhroli line by December 2026.

The decisions were taken during a war room meeting for infrastructure projects, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, which reviewed the progress of 36 major projects across Mumbai, Pune, and Thane. Fadnavis directed agencies to plan execution in a way that projects are completed within two and a half years or earlier.

Projects reviewed included multiple Metro lines, the Atal Setu connector between Worli and Sewri, the Thane–Borivali twin tunnel, the Uttan–Virar sea link, and several key infrastructure works in Pune.

An official from the housing department said, “After completing the first phase at Worli, the remaining phases at Worli, Naigaon, and N.M. Joshi Marg will be expedited by granting vital project status. This ensures regular reviews, fast-tracked environmental clearances, and priority permissions for timely completion.”

The government handed over 556 tenements to original residents under the Worli BDD Chawl redevelopment’s first phase in August 2025. The remaining Worli phase is targeted for completion by May 2029, while the N.M. Joshi Marg and Naigaon phases are expected to be completed by June 2031 and June 2029, respectively.

For Metro 2B (D.N. Nagar–Mandale), Fadnavis has asked MMRDA to adhere to the March 2027 deadline, while the Swami Samarth Nagar–Vikhroli line must be finished by December 2026. The latter project has faced land-related challenges at Shyam Nagar station, which the CM directed officials to resolve within 15 days.

The Chief Minister also instructed authorities to work round the clock to complete the Worli–Sewri connector to Atal Setu by August 2026. Agencies including MMRDA, CIDCO, and MHADA were directed to prioritise pending works and bring delayed projects back on track.

Other projects reviewed included the Thane–Borivali twin tunnel, Uttan–Virar sea link, and the Orange Gate–Marine Drive urban tunnel. Fadnavis also asked MMRDA to release funds for the Airoli–Katai Naka freeway project, which will reduce travel time to 20 minutes, and urged early completion of the 23.8-kilometre Vadpe–Thane road by March 2026 — a key link to the Nagpur–Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway, of which 19 kilometres have already been constructed.

The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over the pace of the Bandra–Versova Sea Link and the Mumbai–Pune Expressway missing link, encouraging the use of advanced construction technology for timely delivery. Contractors working on the Film City–Khindipada (Mulund) tunnel were asked to increase manpower, as the project will offer residents of the western suburbs direct access to Navi Mumbai airport.
