Thiruvananthapuram Airport Records Highest Monthly Traffic

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport recorded its highest monthly passenger traffic in January 2026, handling 450,090 passengers, equivalent to zero point four five million (mn). The average daily passenger movement exceeded 15,000 for the first time, reflecting sustained demand and stronger airline schedules. The performance underlines the airport's emergence as a key aviation hub in South India.

International passenger numbers reached 227,275 while domestic traffic stood at 222,815, indicating balanced growth across sectors. Operational activity increased as the airport handled 2,751 air traffic movements in January, pointing to improved capacity utilisation. Airport authorities are in discussions to introduce additional services in the upcoming summer schedule to meet growing demand.

The achievement is being attributed to coordinated efforts by airlines, airport stakeholders and frontline operational teams, which have worked to enhance processes and reliability. The facility is managed by TRV (Kerala) International Airport Limited (TIAL), a special purpose vehicle under Adani Airport Holdings Limited. The airport is strategically located at the southern tip of the country and caters to air traffic from southern Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu.

Spread over 237 hectares, the airport currently has the capacity to handle four point five mn passengers per annum and 25,000 metric tonnes (t) of cargo. A new development masterplan aims to scale capacity to 27 mn passengers per annum, with state of the art terminal buildings, advanced cargo facilities and a strong emphasis on sustainable, green infrastructure. Planned upgrades are expected to support higher throughput and improve passenger experience.

With ambitious expansion plans and rising passenger demand, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is set to strengthen its position as a prominent aviation gateway and a driver of regional economic and tourism growth. Officials noted the landmark monthly performance reflects enhanced connectivity, improved operational efficiency and cooperation across the aviation ecosystem.
