CIDCO Achieves First Tunnel Breakthrough at Hetawane

CIDCO achieved a major milestone on 29 December 2025 in the augmentation of the Hetawane Water Supply Scheme, with the first tunnel breakthrough at Shaft-4 in Wahal village. The development marks the first such tunnelling success in CIDCO’s history.

The breakthrough was achieved under Water Tunnel Package-1, which is being executed by Afcons Infrastructure. The package includes the construction of an 8.7 km treated water tunnel, of which 5.52 km of tunnelling work has already been completed. The project is aimed at meeting the rising water demand of Navi Mumbai’s fast-developing urban and industrial regions.

The Hetawane Water Supply Scheme is an ambitious initiative involving the construction of a 13.25 km raw water tunnel and a 15.4 km treated water tunnel. Once completed, CIDCO’s water supply capacity will increase significantly from 120 million litres per day to 270 million litres per day, strengthening long-term water security for the city.

Afcons Infrastructure has also set a new national record in tunnelling during the execution of the project. Using its tunnel boring machine, Flamingo, the company achieved 777 metres of tunnelling in a single month, surpassing its earlier national record of 714 metres.

CIDCO said the breakthrough reflects steady progress on critical water infrastructure projects that are essential to supporting Navi Mumbai’s rapid growth and future development.
