Raksha Rajya Mantri Inaugurates Chungthang-Lachen Axis and Taram Chu Bridge

Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth inaugurated the Chungthang-Lachen axis and the 400 ft Bailey Suspension Taram Chu Bridge in North Sikkim, assets restored by the Border Roads Organisation. The Raksha Rajya Mantri is hereafter referred to as RRM and the Border Roads Organisation as BRO. The inauguration marks a major milestone in post-disaster recovery following cloud bursts in May–June 2025, Cyclone Remal in June 2024 and the glacial lake outburst flood in October 2023. The works restore strategic connectivity to forward areas and ensure supply lines for both civilian and defence requirements.

To restore lines of communication, the BRO cleared 96 landslides, constructed four major bridges and repaired two others under Project Swastik. The engineering team completed eight kilometres of fresh formation cutting and created various diversions to navigate unstable slopes and sinking zones. These works followed the earlier opening of the seven point five kilometres Naga-Toong stretch in October 2025, which further established connectivity in the region. The BRO employed specialised engineering methods and temporary diversions to accelerate restoration while prioritising safety on unstable terrain.

The completion of the 28 km Chungthang-Lachen road and the Taram Chu Bridge is expected to serve local residents and security agencies and to boost regional economic activity. The infrastructure will also support logistics for disaster response and routine movement across the sector. Authorities indicated the assets will reduce isolation and improve access to services in remote areas. Local trade and tourism stakeholders are expected to benefit as movement of goods and people becomes more reliable.

The RRM observed that the new assets are pivotal to infrastructure development in North Sikkim and to the wellbeing of local communities. He acknowledged the BRO for sustained engineering and restoration efforts undertaken under challenging conditions. The inauguration was described as aligned with the Atmanirbhar Sikkim-Viksit Bharat Vision outlined by the Chief Minister of Sikkim. The RRM indicated that coordination with the state government and security agencies was central to planning and execution of the projects.
