MMRDA Plans Sixth Station on Partially Cleared Metro 2B Stretch

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to add a sixth station on a partially cleared stretch of Metro 2B in an effort to boost ridership and improve local connectivity. The proposal follows a review of passenger projections and on-the-ground assessments that identified gaps in access for commuters along the corridor. Officials indicated that the new stop would be located within the partially cleared section and would aim to provide easier interchange with surface transport and neighbourhoods that currently remain underserved.

Implementation would require adjustments to the current engineering designs and coordination with civic agencies responsible for land clearance and utilities. The MMRDA has been engaged in discussions with municipal bodies to secure necessary permissions and to minimise disruption to residents and businesses during construction. Planners expect that integrating the additional facility into the existing schedule will call for phased work to maintain continuity of services on adjacent sections.

Transport analysts noted that an additional station on the partially cleared stretch could redistribute passenger flows and increase daily boardings by improving first and last mile connectivity. Commuters along the corridor are likely to benefit from shorter walks to stations and better access to employment and education hubs in Mumbai. Operators will need to revise operational plans and farebox projections to accommodate potential changes in travel patterns.

Funding is expected to be drawn from the MMRDA budget with possible state support and standard procurement routes to be followed for contractor selection.
