Rosatom Showcases Nuclear Energy Solutions at POWERGEN India 2025

Representatives of Rosatom participated in the international forum POWERGEN India & Indian Utility Week 2025, held in New Delhi from September 2–4. As part of the event, a panel discussion titled “Reinventing Atomic Energy for a Net Zero Future” featured industry leaders from Rosatom, the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), NTPC Ltd, and other energy experts.

Ekaterina Astashina, Rosatom’s Business Development Manager for South Asia, highlighted the importance of nuclear energy in achieving decarbonisation goals and shared Rosatom’s experience in India.

“Through the construction of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, we have been able to assess the capabilities of Indian industry. With stronger supply chains and the experience gained, we are confident that we will be able to implement large-scale nuclear projects in India more quickly and efficiently,” Astashina said.

India–Russia Partnership in Nuclear Energy
India and Russia share a long-standing energy partnership, with the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Tamil Nadu as the flagship project.

  • The project involves six VVER-1000 reactor units with a total capacity of 6,000 MW.
  • Units 1 and 2 were connected to India’s national grid in 2013 and 2016.
  • Equipment supplies for Units 3 and 4 are nearing completion, while construction continues.
  • Work on two additional units under the third stage is also underway.
Focus on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
Panelists also discussed the potential of small modular nuclear plants (SNPPs), which can provide reliable clean power to regions with limited grid infrastructure and to industrial enterprises.
Rosatom offers both ground-based and offshore SMR solutions, ensuring stable electricity supply at predictable long-term tariffs. These technologies are attracting interest from large industrial consumers seeking sustainable energy alternatives.
