MoSPI Releases SDG National Indicator Framework Progress Report

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said it updates and releases the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) National Indicator Framework Progress Report annually on National Statistics Day, held on 29 June. The SDG National Indicator Framework Progress Report, 2025 contains 284 national indicators for monitoring progress towards the sustainable development goals. MoSPI develops India’s national indicator framework while States and union territories are responsible for development and updating of State Indicator Frameworks to monitor sub?national progress according to local priorities and data needs.

The report incorporates data provided by line ministries and departments and draws on the Periodic Labour Force Survey among other official sources. Indicators related to the labour force survey are listed in an annexure that accompanies the report. The executive summary highlights progress under Goal One on poverty reduction and Goal Five on gender equality and provides a synthesis of recent trends and policy implications.

Under Goal One, the proportion of the population living in poverty declined from 24.85 per cent in 2015–16 to 14.96 per cent in the 2019–21 period, reflecting sustained reductions in monetary poverty. Coverage under social protection systems expanded from 22.0 per cent in 2016 to 64.3 per cent in 2025, indicating wider reach of targeted programmes. These trends are presented alongside indicator?level data to assist policymakers in assessing the effectiveness of interventions.

Under Goal Five, the female?to?male labour force participation rate ratio rose from zero point four three in 2020–21 to zero point five four in 2023–24, and the share of exclusive women self?help groups in bank?linked self?help groups increased from 88.92 per cent in 2015–16 to 97.04 per cent in 2023–24. MoSPI has sought to strengthen SDG monitoring by signing a tripartite memorandum of understanding with NITI Aayog and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (UNRCO) to improve statistical systems and leverage new technologies. The ministry has also established the Data for Development Coordination Forum (DDCF) to support indicator development, stakeholder review and coordinated discussions with central ministries and United Nations agencies.
