Jewar Airport Targets Net-Zero, Green Operations

The Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar, one of the Uttar Pradesh government’s flagship infrastructure projects, is being developed as what officials describe as the country’s greenest airport, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy, low resource consumption and sustainable operations.

Conceived in line with the green infrastructure vision of Yogi Adityanath, the airport has already secured IGBC Green Campus certification, a first for any airport project in India. The facility is being developed on a net-zero concept in collaboration with Zurich Airport Group.

Officials said the terminal building has been designed to minimise energy, water and waste consumption. Extensive use of natural lighting, energy-efficient systems and smart resource management is expected to significantly reduce the airport’s overall carbon footprint.

According to Shailendra Kumar Bhatia, Additional CEO of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, 20 per cent of the parking area will be equipped with standard and fast charging stations for electric vehicles. All vehicles used for airside operations will be fully electric, supported by charging infrastructure across the campus.

As part of the renewable energy plan, a solar farm spread over 82.94 acres is being developed within the airport premises. The facility is expected to generate around 51,966 megawatt-hours of clean energy, meeting a substantial share of the airport’s power requirements. To strengthen sustainable water management, two rainwater harvesting ponds are being constructed to create long-term water sources.

An RNG plant is also planned, enabling airport vehicles, DG sets and other systems to operate on green fuel. In addition, a comprehensive solid waste management framework will ensure segregation, recycling and scientific treatment of waste.

Authorities said an Environment Monitoring Plan has been prepared to ensure strict compliance with environmental standards. Monthly monitoring of air quality, water, soil, sewage and waste management parameters will be carried out under the plan.

With construction progressing steadily, officials believe the Jewar airport will emerge as a major aviation and logistics hub for north India while setting new benchmarks in sustainable airport development. The project is expected to attract significant investment and employment, reinforcing the state government’s push towards green growth and climate-resilient infrastructure.

State officials added that the airport will usher western Uttar Pradesh into a new phase of connectivity, investment and job creation. Thousands of direct jobs, large-scale infrastructure development and long-term livelihood opportunities for local communities are expected to anchor broader economic transformation along the Yamuna Expressway corridor.

Implemented under the PPP model by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd and Noida International Airport Ltd, the project involves more than 30 reputed companies, including Tata Projects, Indian Oil and Bird Group. Over 5,000 jobs are being created with full government benefits such as minimum wages, provident fund, ESI and gratuity. Special initiatives have also been launched for families that contributed land to the project.

NIA will operate as a fully digital airport, prioritising speed and convenience. Self-bag-drop counters, self-boarding gates and biometric-based DigiYatra verification at all entry points are being installed to reduce waiting times and simplify passenger movement, supported by smart signage and intuitive digital interfaces across the terminal.
