MahaMetro Plans 20 km Shivajinagar–Kondhwa Metro Line

Pune is poised for a major boost in urban mobility, with MahaMetro advancing plans for a 20-kilometre Metro corridor connecting Shivajinagar to Kondhwa, along with a spur to the NIBM area. The project aims to provide faster, cleaner, and more reliable public transport to some of the city’s fastest-growing suburbs.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed line is expected within three months of appointing a consulting agency, which is currently in its final selection phase. Once prepared, the DPR will be submitted to the state government and subsequently forwarded to the Central government for approval.
The new corridor is designed as an extension of the ongoing Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro (PMR-3), being executed under the public–private partnership (PPP) model by Tata. According to MahaMetro officials, the project will improve connectivity across Kondhwa, NIBM, and Yewalewadi, offering a crucial link to the existing Metro network.
“The tenders are in, and we are in the final stages of appointing the agency,” a MahaMetro official confirmed.
Local leaders have voiced strong support for the initiative, citing growing traffic congestion and rapid urban expansion in southern Pune. MLC Yogesh Tilekar, who raised the issue during the recent monsoon session, said, “A dedicated Metro line is essential for this fast-developing area. Authorities must conduct a feasibility study and address traffic challenges through an efficient Metro plan.”
MahaMetro has also revealed plans to extend the Hadapsar line to Saswad as part of Line 4, which will connect to the upcoming Purandar Airport. This expansion will enhance integration across Pune’s western, southern, and eastern corridors, creating a seamless public transport network for the growing metropolis.
The project, estimated at Rs 20 billion, is expected to significantly reduce road congestion, promote sustainable mobility, and improve accessibility for thousands of daily commuters.
