Nagpur Metro Clears Rs 3 Bn Kanhan Extension Plan

Nagpur Metro’s Phase 2 is set for a major boost as MahaMetro readies a 1.3 km northern extension of the Kamptee corridor from Automotive Square to Kanhan village, including a 500-metre steel viaduct across the Kanhan River. The proposal, submitted to the Maharashtra Government in April, will be presented to the Chief Secretary next month for final state clearance before heading to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Priced at roughly Rs 3 billion, the spur will lift Phase 2’s total route length beyond 45 km and raise stations on the Kamptee corridor from 12 to 13, giving thousands of Kanhan residents direct rapid-transit access and easing pressure on arterial roads. Land acquisition across Phase 2 is more than 90 per cent complete, and work on stations such as Lok Vihar, Pili Nadi and Kamptee Police Station is on track, with Lok Vihar slated to open by November 2025.

A senior MahaMetro official said the extension “is a strategic addition that brings last-mile connectivity closer to the city’s northern fringe”. Once the state issues its go-ahead, central approval is expected within months, keeping Nagpur Metro’s expansion firmly on schedule.
